After typing my massive missive this morning and mentioning STRANDED after 2 years of not really thinking about it, Steve suggested I post the pages here for love and edification. A quick note or two about STRANDED:
Shortly after moving back to the city, I was stumbling blindly across
Avenue A with Ethan when I was nearly knocked down by a speeding
taxicab. As the cab flew past, something smacked my Marker’s
Mark-stankin’ face: a 4×6 photo. I peeled it off my face
and looked at it; seemed to be photos of a wedding party somewhere in
the Middle East. Ethan started laughing and tried not to throw
up, and I noticed there were more, about 12 photos in total… the cab
left a trail of them after the cabbie tossed them out the window.
A loooooooooooooooong subway ride was spent staring at them, while
sweating bourbon and trying not to pass out; I was trying to suss out
the story behind them, like panels in a comic page. One morning
and hangover later, I showed them to Steve… and the experiment that
is STRANDED was born. I crawled around SoHo in the rain on a
dinner break from then-job to get the background photos for the New
York street stuffs; the chick is modeled after Audey Tautou from
AMELIE. Whether or not the “story experiment” works, it was
intended as a showcase for my vector kung-fu.
Originally supposed to be published in my friend David G’s :MART
magazine startup in good old MIA, the mag never took off and the work’s
never seen the light except when I flash it in my portfolio… These
pages got me the gig drawing FLESH FOR THE BEAST.
