Largehearted Boy asked me to contribute a playlist of songs/tracks that helped shape my creative process while working on 08: A GRAPHIC DIARY OF THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, and so I began:
As my comics differ from prose in that there are writing/art/design/edit stages to the creative process, I tend to use different musical styles as inspiration-goosers depending on what stage of the creation I’m in. As a former DJ and music obsessive, I realize I’ve gone overboard and have broken up the playlist into stages…
Check out the original post here for the working-soundtrack behind the comics.
This week’s Approval Matrix in New York Magazine dubs 08 “highbrow/brilliant,” placing us between Michelle Obama and “Capt. Sully.”

Our pals at MySpace Comic Books approached me after seeing our first public excerpt a few weeks ago… and paid me such sweet compliments that we just couldn’t refuse. Here’s an all-new handful of free pages for you to enjoy on our magical debut day.

This morning, Michael Crowley was a guest on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” discussing 08, beginning around 04:00′.
This week in my favorite comic-shopping app, Comixology features 08 as their item of the week, highlighted across their synergistic site/iPhone app/web-app as well as an interview with yours truly in their weekly podcast (also via iTunes). This particular interview is a bit process-heavy which should be interesting to digital illustrators out there, and sees me stringing my last few major projects together and tying them up with a shiny bow.
We’ve also set up an 08 Facebook group to serve as our 08 communications hub, which you can join here:
Tomorrow’s baby’s big day; love to hear your thoughts on 08 in the comments…
As we get closer to 08′s Jan 27th release, The Daily Beast features a new exclusive excerpt as part of their truly excellent political coverage, this time dealing with the roll-up to Obama’s triumphant speech at Denver’s Invesco Field. Ordering information for the graphic novel is available here.
Here’s a nice interview I’ve just done up at the Graphic Novel Reporter for you to enjoy; there are hints at upcoming beauties towards the end.
Today I’d like to give you a free gift: a 20-page excerpt from my upcoming nonfiction graphic novel 08: A GRAPHIC DIARY OF THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL. Stylistically a mashup of sequential narrative and graphic design, 08 is a documentary-in-comics of this historic and magical election we’re all still buzzing from, as seen from reporters’ perspective on the campaign trail. You can download the excerpt by clicking above, along with info/links to order the physical book when it’s released on January 27th across North America.
I’m awfully awfully awfully proud of this new baby of mine; I hope it makes you misty too.
Dearest reader, I’d like to share some photos snapped by the artful lens of Seth Kushner in anticipation of 08′s January 6 release. Seth and I met at Grand Central Terminal in New York during weekday lunch-hour, capture a NY journalists-of-past vibe but with a modern touchscreen twist:
